10-SESSION PARENTING COURSE
(EACH SESSION IS 2 HOURS)
SESSION 1: MEET AND GREET, INTRODUCTION TO COURSE (and intake paperwork)
In this session: Welcome to the “Parenting Young Children” course! This introductory “meet & greet” session provides a general overview of the course. WE end the session with a discussion of parenting stress.
SESSION 2: INTRODUCTION TO PARENTING
In this session: We discuss why parenting is so important, and how parent education can assist parents and caregivers in this most critical role. Some key findings from recent research studies on parenting are discussed, including how one’s parenting “style” dramatically impacts a child’s development.
SESSION 3: ATTACHMENT: THE FOUNDATION FOR PARENTING
In this session: We discuss children’s basic psychological needs. The most important of these is the need for a secure attachment which results from warm, sensitively-attuned, responsive caregiving. Key strategies for creating a secure attachment bond are reviewed. We conclude the session with strategies for responding when a child has a problem/need.
SESSION 4: CHILD DEVELOPEMENT: MILESTONES, KEY NEEDS, GUIDANCE TIPS
In this session: We discuss children’s development, highlight brain development, how children think and reason, and key developmental “tasks” at each age. Knowing how children grow and develop helps parents better understand what typical behavior is, what children are capable of, and what their needs are at each age.
SESSION 5: UNDERSTANDING CHILD BEHAVIOR (AND RESPONDING TO CHALLENGING BEHAVIORS)
In this session: The goal of this session is to provide parents with a deeper understanding of children’s behavior. We first review some general points about child behavior and then discuss how challenging behaviors are actually a child’s communication to us that they are having a hard time and need our help. Common causes of, and strategies for responding to challenging behaviors are reviewed.
SESSION 6: GUIDANCE AND DISCIPLINE: PUNISHMENTS VS. POSTIVE CHILD GUIDANCE
In this session: We discuss the research findings of the use of traditional punishments vs. “positive child guidance” for the guidance and discipline of children. “Positive child guidance” refers to ways of communicating and interacting with children, and guiding children’s behavior that are based on research and which support children’s brain and overall development.
SESSION 7: POSTIVE CHILD GUIDANCE: SETTLING LIMITS; GETTING KIDS TO COOPERATE
In this session: We discuss positive guidance strategies for setting limits, getting children to cooperate, and for guiding child behavior. These effective strategies simultaneously support children’s brain development, thinking and reasoning skills, language development, and social-emotional functioning.
SESSION 8: BUILDING YOUR CHILD’S BRAIN: “PARENT TALK”
In this session: A rich language environment during the first 3 years of life is critical for healthy brain development, school readiness, and school success. We discuss why language is so vital and how to provide lots of “parent talk” for young children. (The following session covers the importance of reading aloud).
SESSION 9: BUILDING YOUR CHILD’S BRAIN: READING ALOUD; PLAY
In this session: We discuss why reading aloud to young children from early infancy on is vital to early development and for creating a rich language environment. Suggestions for how and what to read, and other key ways to support early literacy are reviewed. Next, we discuss how play is “the work of the child”, including why it is important(and guidelines for adults).
SESSION 10: EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION; GETTING READY FOR KINDERGARTEN;& WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD SUCCEED IN SCHOOL (K-12)!
In this session: We discuss Preschool: Benefits of, What Children Learn, How to Choose, Helping Child Adjust
